The threat of climate change and increasing shortage of fossil fuels is leading to louder calls for alternative energies. Photovoltaics - the conversion of light into electrical power - already provides mankind with a technology that delivers an endless source of environmentally-friendly energy. In future, according to the opinion of most experts, photovoltaics will be the most important of all energy sources.
With the micromorph silicon thin film technology we have taken one step closer to achieving this goal. Building on the basic research conducted by the Jülich Research Centre, thanks to intensive development work carried out by the photovoltaic experts, Sontor GmbH has succeeded in steering this innovative technology towards the point where it is ready for mass production. Thanks to the use of silicon - one of the most common of all elements - and the avoidance of the need for heavy metals, we have created a product which is environmentally-friendly through and through. Europe’s first plant for the manufacture of micromorph silicon thin film solar modules was built in Bitterfeld-Wolfen within a very short space of time.
